It has been a tough year for nonprofits, and The Spartanburg County Foundation is pleased to announce additional COVID-19 grant funding on Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday takes on special significance this year as nonprofits have struggled in a year burdened by the coronavirus pandemic. This funding is being awarded to five nonprofit organizations needing additional capacity to maintain operations throughout the pandemic as they work to innovatively address the immediate needs of Spartanburg County residents.
Nearly two thirds (63%) of nonprofits responding to a Together SC survey indicate they can survive for only six months or fewer without additional funding. Five percent indicate they are out of funds now and 29% say they can only operate for three more months without additional funds. The Foundation’s focus on flexible grants allows nonprofits who are serving communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 to determine the best use of funds.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate is the recipient of a $20,000 grant for general operating support and technology adaption.
- Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands
Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands is the recipient of a $10,000 grant to update the conference room with technology for virtual learning at Camp Mary Elizabeth.
- Spartanburg Academic Movement
Spartanburg Academic Movement is the recipient of a $25,000 grant to provide tutoring services for Spartanburg County students experiencing a lag in their educational attainment due to the pandemic.
- Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation
Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation is the recipient of a $10,000 grant to provide financial assistance for families facing end-of-life illnesses.
- Christmas In Action
Christmas In Action is the recipient of a $10,000 grant for general operating support and building supplies to repair homes for elderly and disadvantaged residents in Spartanburg County.
The Spartanburg County Foundation also awarded $10,000 in disaster relief grant funding to two nonprofit organizations from the Spartanburg County Disaster Relief Fund.
- S.C. Hunters and Landowners for the Hungry
S.C. Hunters and Landowners for the Hungry is the recipient of a $5,000 grant to assist with purchasing food from Second Harvest food bank. The organization currently supports over 18 nonprofits in Spartanburg County through the distribution of meat and essential food items from their Pacolet facility.
- Paws, Prayers, & Promises
Paws, Prayers, & Promises is the recipient of a $5,000 grant to assist with animal surgeries related to serious injuries and the continuation of the spay/neuter service.
The Spartanburg County Foundation recently awarded a grant from a portion of dollars in the Spartanburg County Foundation Community Fund dedicated to building the capacity of grassroots organizations and those led by people of color.
BRUH Mentor is the recipient of a $17,397 grant to support virtual learning/mentoring and board/staff development. This grant will advance the 10+ year history BRUH has invested in Spartanburg youth by transitioning mentoring online. Additionally, funding will provide board training on governance and the strategic planning process.
